Just saw this posted on Twitter with this comment: "Johnny Depp just jumped the shark. In character as Jack Sparrow, on stage for Disney nerds.Me Savvy?"

Here is a link to the AP announcement as listed on Yahoo news. Did any of our friends at the expo see Depp's appearance?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090911/ap_en_ot/us_film_pirates_of_the_caribbean

Thoughts...I'm kind of excited...it's been a bit of time and I'm hoping the story is fresh. Though I loved the first film...I'm at a bit of a loss as to where they'll go with it. I have a friend who has been working stuff for the project for a number of years already...so I hope that means there are great things to come!!

I can't say I'm terribly thrilled by this announcement. The first Pirates film was passable entertainment, saved only by the delightful eccentricity of Depp's performance, but the sequels were nearly unwatchable, IMHO.

As long as Disney is making money, and they stop dumping Pirates stuff all over the theme parks, I suppose another sequel doesn't really hurt anything. Just keep Captain Sparrow and friends out of EPCOT Center and everything will be fine.

Having heard that Depp really likes doing the Sparrow character, and seeing how this is one of the few Disney products that is not intended to make everyone a little princess, I think this is good news.

I liked the first pirate movies, but the second and third... not so much. I think it was that the story was made to stretch over 2 movies. I hope 4 will be a single concise, well told story.

Considering how Depp is doing so much other work right now (Alice, Tonto, just finished a few others), I think the comment about "jumping the shark" is a bit premature. The guy is doing nicely, and it is not as if this is going to "save" his career or the franchise. Both are doing quite nicely by themselves.

Depp continues to be a well rounded, and in many cases, family-friendly actor. I think his association to Disney is good for both sides.

As much as this franchise is dear to me...I sort of felt it jumped the shark with Pirates 3. I overcame the thought when watching them all together as saw how 2 & 3 more or less go together. A fourth film in the franchise...yah, he could be dead on about jumping the shark.

We'll see. I'm going to remain optimistic. I do love the Sparrow character and i think with all the creativity available to these folks they have the propensity to do something great.

The third one had a horrible story and was totally convoluted. The good news is that the new one sounds like it won't be a big billion dollar production, and they'll focus more on the characters, which means more Jack.

I read something interesting over at Geeks of Doom, they found a pirate book named "On Stranger Tides" and that the book features the fountain of youth... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Stranger_Tides

Apparently this book was some inspiration of the Monkey Island video games, could this book have been optioned by Disney and will server as the basis of the new PotC movie?

I have heard a rumour about the fountain of youth being a part of a future Pirates film...have no clue about the book of which you speak, however... Ah the suspense and speculation around all things Disney!

I say they make 2 movies at once. 1 with Jack Sparrow going for the ftn of youth, and the second where Indiana Jones finding a really young Jack Sparrow hanging at the ftn of youth...

Then they figure out how to weave the two rides together as well.

There has been a lot of talk recently that Johnny Depp may not return for PotC 4, because of the recent issues with D ick Cook's departure...

According to this article (http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Disney-Promises-Depp-For-Pirates-4-14951.html), Disney is stating that Johnny Depp will return for PotC 4 (although it is said that he still has not officially sign a contract yet)...

Recent rumors are that Depp will appear in PotC 4, mainly because he has already public stated that he would. But, it is said that he probably would not return for any other sequels. Disney apparently is working to replace Capt Jack Sparrow for future movies, this speculation is being fueled by this article from MTV: http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2009/09/28/disney-prepares-to-replace-johnny-depp-in-pirates-of-the-caribbean-franchise/

So the question is, are you interested in a PotC movie without Depp and Capt Jack?

Depends how well they create the characters. We were all interested before Sparrow/Depp first came on the screen, I think fans would still be interested. It all comes down to the plot and how well they develop the characters.

They could take characters from POTC online and work it from that angle, or there are sure to be other places they could go for pirate ideas.

I particularly think the ladies would like to see a good lady pirate take the seas.

I read Depp's statement about Cook leaving. I'd be surprised if continued with it based on that.

I say end it. Come up with a new story. Make a new film. Be creative.

ePirates is near and dear to me...but seriously folks. We all know what it means to 'jump the shark'.

OK...jump the shark...jump the shark....

Jumping the shark in my mind, would be if Capt Jack fell threw a time portal and ended up in 21st Century america, trying to rip off a casino with George Clooney, while stealing cars with nicholas cage...only to be bit by a radioactive spider....

well you get my point....

I think the "Jumping the Shark" expression is used a bit too loosey....a bad movie...is just that...a bad movie...jumping the shark...is taking things to a rediculous level...

for those of you who don't know the origin of this expression....check it out here...
