The most visible sign yet of the 10-year deal signed in 2007 between Walt Disney World and Hanes Brands Inc. is expected to debut today when the Disney's Design a Tee Presented by Hanes shop begins a soft opening in Downtown Disney's Marketplace.
The shop, next to The Art of Disney store at the east end of Downtown Disney, will allow customers to use one of eight touch-screen kiosks to design their own short- or long-sleeve T-shirts, featuring more than 300 items of Disney art and up to four lines of text, and have them printed while they wait.
"They select a shirt style, color and art, write a personal message or select from a set of programmed messages," said Hanes marketing director Dudley Gentry.
Prices range from $20 to $30. Shirts are made in about 15 minutes, he said, and patrons can wait and watch them being made on video screens, pick them up later or have them delivered.
As part of the deal, clothing maker Hanes became the official (though not necessarily exclusive) T-shirt supplier at Disney World.
Disney dresses 300 bears
Using leftover fabric from the costumes of famous Disney characters, Walt Disney World costume designers, seamstresses and others are making Disney-designed teddy bears for needy children across Central Florida.
Through the Salvation Army's Dress-A-Bear program, Disney employees from costuming, cosmetology and other departments dressed more than 300 teddy bears for the Salvation Army Toy Shop, which distributes holiday gifts for families in Orange and Osceola counties.
Disney began outfitting the teddy bears in 1996; now the operation involves the volunteer efforts of hundreds of employees from all six of the resort's costume-sewing rooms.
They have been working on this store for quite a while and it was still boarded up on Saturday afternoon. The store is located on the far right side of the building (at DTD) that contains the Art of Disney store and the Scrapbook store. Also included in the project, and actually has already opened, is another Build Your Own Ears standing within the scrapbook section of the store.
Is it bad that when I hear about this store, all I can think about is the old airbrush stand that was located near Guest Relations at DTD (where the PhotoPass stuff is at now)... Disney's Wonderful World of Memories closed down back in late September for this remodel. The left portion of the sotre reopened just before Thanksgiving with the Build-a-ear part added. The right side - now called Disney's Design-a-Tee by Haines-reopened nearly 2 weeks ago. There were issues with the machines, but it seems to be running fine now.
