I still remember the first time I rode Horizons. It was so amazing, we must have gone back and seen it at least five times that trip. The Animatronics, IMAX video, music, and script were all brilliant. The pinnacle of accomplishments for WED Enterprises.
It's sad, but Horizons was the last hurrah for traditional Disney themed design in the vein of Pirates, Haunted Mansion, and Spaceship Earth. Since the mid-nineties, EPCOT Center has been overrun by soulless thrill rides like Mission: SPACE and Test Track while classic theme rides that actually meant something, like World of Motion, Journey Into Imagination, and Horizons, have been gutted.
At least we can still relive a shadow of that experience through UAB and YouTube.
I absolutely agree. They may not be thrilling but they had substance. Sadly we, as a society, are gradually moving that way as it is. I think you can get a real feel for that if you listen to Rocket to the Moon, Flight to the Moon and Mission to Mars in order. Rocket is a really simple, there-and-back trip, Flight has some problems but nothing too major and Mission has a disaster that requires you to make an emergency return. It's kind of a dumb thing to notice but I think it really shows how entertainment as a whole has changed over the years. Excitement over education, flash over form. It is kind of sad really but we are becoming more and more interested in information that can easily be squeezed into a text/tweet/status update and less interested in the details. :-/ _________________ '00 - Studios Merch (Stage 1/Tatooine Traders/Coaster Photo/Fantasmic), '05-'06 - Attractions (KSR), Dinoland Merch, '06-'07 - Concierge (Multiple Resorts), '07-'08 - Dream Squad (Aminal Kingdom), '10 - DVC Member Services
