I will not conceed the franchise only works with Depp. He is good, and Sparrow is a great character. But that does not mean a new pirate/actor can not make as big an impact.
Admittedly it would not be easy and they are big boots to step into, but I think with the right person, it could be done. I see the flaw in the series the fact that 2 and 3 could not stand on their own legs with out each other.
Now... should the franchise be continued or not... Disney made it a franchise as opposed to single film, with the sequals, the merchandising, the marketing, gaming, etc. Once you build something like this it is hard to kill it. all that money invested, to walk away with out trying to recapitalize on it? I don't think the mouse house is capable of doing it with out first failing or seeing the profits starting to dry up.
Walt did not like doing sequels to movies. Of course he also was able to come up with more creative stuff. |

Couple of quick updates, Rob Marshall has confirmed that he will be the director and Johnny Depp appears to be getting a $30 Million Payday... _________________ Up or Down North, South, East, or West An Adventurer's Life is Best! |

Now Johnny Depp singing might be "jumping the shark". I am not sure how you go and make POTC a musical.
Of course he sang "pirate's Life" in the first movie. |

The Blue Sky Disney Blog has more details regarding Pirates 4:
"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise --this time in Disney Digital 3D(TM). In this action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise, Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), and he's not sure if it's love--or if she's a ruthless con artist who's using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn't know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.
Rush reprises his role as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa, and Kevin R. McNally returns as Captain Jack's longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs. Claflin stars as a stalwart missionary, while Berges-Frisbey is transformed into a mysterious mermaid.

If they stay away from too much of the fantasy and can capture the feel and fun of the first PotC, then this could be a great movie! _________________ Up or Down North, South, East, or West An Adventurer's Life is Best! |

Could be interesting. I'd prefer more of a POTC 1 feel over a 2 or 3.
Also with pulling in Balckbeard there are many that will be concerned with "authernticity" forgetting this is just a movie. |

I like the idea of Incorporating another famous Pirate into the story line.... Blackbeard is notorious in alot of stories and tales of Maritime plundering! I like the hook up with The Fountain of Youth... Whats next introduction of jack Sparrow Riding "Moby nostril" ???? |

Considering it is Disney, might riding Monstro be more fitting?
I actually want to see this progress for another reason. I want to see how well they tie this and POTC online together. The two are tied together now, but they seem to be tying them closer together lately. |

Jumping the shark in my mind, would be if Capt Jack fell threw a time portal and ended up in 21st Century america, trying to rip off a casino with George Clooney, while stealing cars with nicholas cage...only to be bit by a radioactive spider....
well you get my point....
I think the "Jumping the Shark" expression is used a bit too loosey....a bad movie...is just that...a bad movie...jumping the shark...is taking things to a rediculous level...
for those of you who don't know the origin of this expression....check it out here...

If that broadside naval battle in the middle of the whirlpool towards the end of the final film isn't taking the franchise to a ridiculous level, how much further do they need to go? I think the third film is the very definition of the phrase, from beginning to end.
A slight aside, although I kind of like the movie, I love this review of the second film:
